Required Classes - Classes are set-up on a block schedule for students in the high school. There are four periods a day, each period being ninety minutes. A minimum of 28 credits are required to graduate from Hayward High School.
These credits must include:
4 credits in English – including ½ credit of Speech
3 credits in Social Science- including ½ credit of Civics
3 credits in Mathematics - Minimum level of Algebra I B
3 credits in Science
1-1/2 credits in Physical Education – must be ½ credit of Health Education, required in 9th Grade
½ credit of Financial Literacy
Other Graduation requirements:
*Civics Test Requirement: Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, in order to receive a high school diploma a student must take, during the high school grades, a civics test comprised of 100 questions that may be asked of an individual during the process of applying for U.S. citizenship by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The student must correctly answer at least 65 of those questions.
*Students are allowed to retake a test an unlimited number of times in order to achieve a passing score
.
*Students with disabilities who have an individualized education plan (IEP) must complete the test, but cannot be required to pass the test in order to graduate. A limited-English proficient student must be permitted to take the civics test in the student's language of choice.
*Beginning with the class of 2018, students will need to meet the required components of the Academic and Career Planning, (ACP).
